A commissioned print for a cycling team
This commission is for a team of two taking part in the cape epic 8 day mtb race in South Africa. They wanted a design that would work on a cycle jersey, and that reflected their nationality... hence the Scottish lion on a mountain bike.
I sketched the lion from a lot if angles before I was happy with it - it’s quite tricky given the rigid stance of the lion on the Scottish flag. Once the design was approved and tweaked I carved the lion in linocut. At this stage we were still debating about colours and it took several prints to get it right. We settled on a bright red lion on a very dark blue bike to complement the light blue cycling shirt.
Once the design was approved I printed the linocut in two colours, then scanned the image and tweaked it in photoshop. The final image was sent to an online cycling jersey company and printed from the digital print.
