Getting started with linocut : tools and materials
Linocut printing is a great technique to learn, that suits an endless variety of styles and abilities. It is often the starting point for anyone interested in printmaking. One of the most daunting things for the beginner is choosing tools and materials. Here are my recommendations with links to purchase.
Set of five basic carving tools - Jackson’s own brand woodcut tools, that are also brilliant for linocut. They are sturdy, easy to use and very inexpensive.
Grey Lino blocks - 10x15cm - unmounted - from Jacksons
Roller - Small, basic roller (soft)
Ink - Any relief printing ink will work. Go for water based or ‘ceans up like water’. My favourite is Cranfield safe wash relief ink, which has a rich oil based texture but cleans up with soap and water. This is very important if you are working at home.
Paper - To begin with any paper will do - preferrably light coloured..
Wooden spoon - This is to rub the back of the paper to transfer the design from the lino
