Mixing abstract and realistic styles in printmaking

I created a small edition of Forth Rail Bridge prints for ‘Print Day in May. For me, the Forth Bridge represents going to see my family in the Highlands (I live in the south of the country) and I’ve been making this journey for 47 years now!!! Due to lockdown (at time of writing, Scotland is 5 weeks into travel ban due to corona virus) I missed seeing my family at Easter, and it could be some time before we get together again. I also love the journey up the A9, and, for me, the Forth Bridge is a sign that I’m in the north and the landscape will start to change.

The bridge in this print is a strong graphic linocut carving. The background is a watercolour monoprint and I use an aeropress coffee filter to print the sun and a Costa coffee bacon roll carton (saved from my last trip to Inverness - I collect textures!!) for the waters of the Firth.
